GoldenCompass Features
Original Clicks
Q: What is the best feature of GoldenCompass?
A : It is that it provides analysis contents with just one click.
For example, when you need technology trends on blockchain, you can analyze [Companies with US patents in possession in the field of "augmented reality" with just one click.
If you are looking for companies for the purpose of investing, you can click on "rapidly growing companies" or "specialized companies". In this way, 100 to 2,000 analysis contents on the targeted item (e.g., blockchain) are provided with the original click.
On the other hand, if you click the "Download Report" button, you will receive a freely editable report in an MS Word file.
Q : What is the core value of GoldenCompass?
A : Saving time/money.
Providing one-click analysis contents or generating one-click reports are all about saving time/money.
Most analytics projects spend a significant portion (at least 50%) of their total cost on preparing and processing data for analysis. The point of an analysis project is to derive insights. However, the reality is that most of the time/money that should be spent on deriving insights is not spent on deriving insights. GoldenCompass helps people spend their valuable time/money on insights.
Q : Why does GoldenCompass offer so many different menus?
A : To keep up with the speed of thought.
The process of human thinking or exploration/analysis is never sequential or structured; in the real world of data analysis, thinking and exploration unfolds in a networked fashion. Meaningful insights are derived only after going through a complex route such as exploration-analysis-verification-association-comparison-business implications/utilization, etc. Therefore, various analysis contents (100~2,000 per item) corresponding to the diversity, unorderedness, and unstructuredness of thought should be provided in real time with an original click, so that the person analyzing can continue the analysis according to the flow of thought without being interrupted.
Difference from patent search
Q : How is it different from the existing patent search?
A : PatentPia Search provides search services that are equivalent to existing patent search services. Of course, we provide differentiated patent search services that conventional patent search does not provide (such as searching for patents used in events such as litigation/judgments/transactions/standards... and special patents such as forward citations, etc.).
The PatentPia GoldenCompass is an analysis-centered content service that is different from PatentPia Search. In traditional patent search, you enter search terms/conditions and a list of patents is output. However, PatentPia GoldenCompass displays 100~2,000 kinds of analysis contents with analysis tables and visualized charts.
1.
Search result of PatentPia Search = list of patents
Results of searching "augmented reality" with OR condition on title of invention, abstract, and representative claims
2.
result of PatentPia GoldenCompass = analysis contents
Analysis of US patent shares by company for "augmented reality"

Keyword
Keyword extraction range
Q : Where are keywords extracted from the content of the patent?
A : Keywords are extracted from the following contents of the patent: i) title of invention, ii) abstract, and iii) claims.
The detailed description of invention is not subject to keyword extraction by default; however, for certain purposes, keywords are extracted from certain parts of the detailed description of invention.
Q : How are keywords extracted?
A : Keywords are extracted through the following process.
•
Step 1 : Extract the important expressions contained in the description of the patent
•
Step 2: Determine whether or not the extracted expressions can be used to represent the patent
•
Step 3: Maintenance/processing/representation of keywords
•
Step 4 : Generate metric values for representative keywords
Q : In what language do you provide keywords?
A : In principle, we provide keywords in English.
Keywords extracted from patents in non-English speaking countries also have English as the primary language of keyword expression. This enables comparison across nations with the same English keywords.
Keyword Classification
Q : Why is keyword classification necessary?
A : If you have a keyword classification, you can take a list of keywords and filter only the keywords with the original attributes.
If you have keywords that have been extracted from patents and organized, you can utilize them for technology sensing and many other purposes. When you don't have keywords, it's nice to have a lot of them. However, when there are many, there is a problem that it takes a lot of time to review. In this case, if you have a classification for keywords, you can filter using the classification and extract only the selected keywords.
Q : What are the keyword classifications?
A : GoldenCompass has the following classification system for keywords: i) Product-Part, ii) Material-Substance, iii) Data Technology, iv) Disease, v) Purpose-Effect, vi) Characteristics, vii) Others. Each large classification has a small classification system (2 depth). For example, in the lower material-substance, there are more than 20 categories: i) drugs, ii) FDA approvals, iii) biochemicals, iv) genes, v) enzymes, vi) chemicals, vii) polymeric materials, vii) medical materials, viii) construction materials, vx) natural substances, x) laboratory reagents and materials, etc.
Criteria of patent sets corresponding to keywords
Q : How are the patents that are the basis of analysis for each keyword determined?
A : Patents from each nation that contain the keyword in the title of invention, abstract, or claims of the patent.
For non-English speaking nations, we map the patents corresponding to each keyword against the patent's title of invention, abstract, or patent claims translated into English.
Classification
Kind of classification
Q : What are the classifications offered by GoldenCompass?
The classifications offered by GoldenCompass include i) technology classification, ii) patent classification (CPC/IPC (coming soon)), iii) product classification, iv) material classification, and v) concept classification (coming soon). Classifications are different from keywords, which have no hierarchy, in that they have a hierarchy.
Q : What is patent classification (CPC/IPC)?
Intellectual property offices around the world assign one or more patent classification codes, selected from a standardized patent classification scheme, to patents that are applied for and open. The most commonly utilized patent classification scheme is the 70,000-item international patent classification (IPC), while many countries, including the United States of America, Europe, China, and Korea, use the 260,000-item cooperative patent classification (CPC) as their primary classification scheme. The CPC is much more up-to-date with technology and contains almost all of the IPC codes, making it more usable.
For a detailed CPC classification scheme, see the "United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) CPC" page.
Technology classification
Q : Why does GoldenCompass use technology classifications?
PatentPia provides a proprietary classification of technology with over 100,000 entries. In order to ensure the reliability and authenticity of the technology classification, GoldenCompass uses the cooperative patent classification (CPC) of 260,000+ entries for more than 95% of the lower classification schemes that make up the technology classification scheme.
However, these CPC classifications are not the only ones.
•
The upper classification scheme is not user-friendly (e.g., one of the top sections, the G section, is titled Physics),
•
It's based on the IPC taxonomy, which has been around since 1971, so the latest technologies are scattered throughout.
etc.
As a result,
•
The need to organize the scattered CPCs by topic,
•
There is a need to give names to the collected CPC sets (especially in the upper and lower technology classifications),
There is a need to introduce a technology classification scheme that is different from CPCs.
Q : How do I know the reliability of the GoldenCompass technology classification?
A : To ensure the reliability and authenticity of GoldenCompass' technology classifications, each technology classification is accompanied by a CPC code, which is the actual technology classification. For example, the technology classification "Computer-aided design" is armored with the CPC code G06F30/00, as in Computer-aided design[G06F30/00].
In this way, by merging the technology classification with a corresponding CPC code, GoldenCompass is clarifying the basis for the technology classification.
Q : How are patents created that correspond to GoldenCompass technology classifications?
A : Each technology classification is mapped with a CPC code. Therefore, using the CPC code, we search for patents granted by the intellectual property office of each nation with that CPC code, and map the searched patents to the technology classification. As a result, the patents corresponding to the technology classifications are reliable and authentic.
Product-Part Classification
Q : Why does GoldenCompass use product classification?
A : Because there is a need to organize and hierarchize products-parts in a systematic way.
For example, under the "Sensors" product classification, there are mid-level classifications by "Sensing Target", and for each mid-level classification, there is a corresponding "Sensor Family", and for each sensor family, there is a "Specific Sensor Product".
Q : How do I know the reliability of the GoldenCompass product-part classification?
A : To ensure the reliability and authenticity of our technology classifications, GoldenCompass adopts standardizations such as UNSPSC/GS1, a global logistics standard.
However, in the case of products and parts with great diversity/importance, such as sensors, we conduct a separate survey to create a classification system. The reason for this is as follows: Even in the UNSPSC system with more than 160,000 items, there are only 80 types of sensors. Therefore, GoldenCompass has established a system for more than 2,000 specific sensors through separate research.
Q : How are patents created that correspond to the GoldenCompass product-part classification?
A : How to create a patent corresponding to each product-part classification?
•
If the product-part is still in the CPC, use the CPC to extract the patent,
•
If the product-part does not exist in the CPC, use the product name keywords to extract patents where the product-part is included in the title of invention, abstract, or claims of the patent.
patents in the name, abstract, or claims of the invention.
Ingredient-material classification
Q : Why does GoldenCompass use material-ingredient classification?
A : Because there is a need to systematically collect and hierarchize material-ingredient in one place.
Q : How do I know the reliability of the GoldenCompass material-ingredient classification?
A : To ensure the reliability and authenticity of the material-ingredient classification, GoldenCompass uses various standardization classification systems such as MeSH, which is the standard classification system in the medical industry.
Q : How is a patent created that corresponds to a GoldenCompass material-ingredient classification?
A : How to create a patent corresponding to each material-ingredient classification?
•
If the material-ingredient is still in the CPC, use the CPC to extract the patent,
•
If the material-ingredient is not in the CPC, use the material name keywords to extract patents where the material-ingredient is included in the title of invention, abstract, or claims of the patent.
patents where the name is included in the name, abstract, or claims of the invention.
Company/Organization
Criteria of patent set corresponding to company/organization
Q : On what basis are patents corresponding to a company/organization created?
A : A company/organization-specific patent set is created based on the current applied, open, and issued patents in possession of the company/organization. If a particular patent filed by A has been assigned/transacted and is currently held by B, then the patent is mapped to B and not A.
In addition, patents that have been applied for, opened, and received rejection notices, and patents that have been issued but have expired due to default of maintenance fee or expiration of statute of limitations are also included in the company/organization-specific patent set because of their informational value.
NPEs (non practicing entities)
Q : Are NPEs patent monsters?
A : GoldenCompass uses NPE in a neutral sense - if we have to define it, we treat right holders who behave like NPEs as NPEs. If you are acting like an NPE, you are
•
Building their patent portfolio with purchased/exclusive licenses rather than applications,
•
they file a large number of patent litigations relative to the size of their patent portfolio; and
•
Transferring patents from or to known NPEs; and
•
Engage in or be acquired by a known NPE; and
•
Sharing the same/highly equivalent address between entities in patent transactions; and
•
has an aggressive licensing program,
•
aggressively pursue a high volume of patent litigations
etc.
As a result, while non-practicing entities, universities/research institutes, are technically NPEs, GoldenCompass, for practical reasons, does not classify universities/research organizations as NPEs except in very special circumstances.
Researchers
Ethnicity.
Q : How is the ethnicity of researchers determined and on what basis?
A : Researchers' ethnicity is information that can be utilized for various purposes, such as HR, etc. Ethnicity estimation is done by machine learning methods using the researchers' first name and last name as material.
Since the ethnicity data is estimated, we ask that you utilize it as a reference. For reference, ethnicity is not related to the researchers' address.
