Quick summary of analytical indexes
Quick guide
A brief description of the analytical index is in the annotations. Annotation items are marked with a red superscript, and the annotation content is located within the bottom box of the analysis table. You can see more annotations by clicking the "v" to the right of the annotation box.
There are four types of analytical indices: i) key indices, ii) comprehensive indices, iii) indices by theme, and iv) overall indices (=predictive evaluation).
The analytical indices are located in the menu i) "Evaluation" → "Evaluation Indices" or ii) "Index Comparison".
The key indices are a selection of the most important of the comprehensive indices, for each of which we add i) 10-year CAGR (CAGR_10Y) , ii) 5-year CAGR (CAGR_5Y), iii) recent 2-year growth rate, and iv) recent 2-quarter growth rate. Indices by theme include i) portfolio, ii) impact (citations), iii) globalization, iv) quality, v) R&D continuity (self-references/citations), vi) disputes (litigation/trials), vii) transactions, and viii) rejections.
Brief description of key analytical indices
analytical index | Index descriptions | Criteria description | A brief explanation |
No. of published patents | No. of published patents for which a patent publication has been issued after filing and the patent technology is open to the public | Based on patents in possession (applications+purchased-sold) as current right holder | R&D total |
No. of issued patents | No. of issued patents that have passed the examination of the Intellectual Property Office and have been registered. | No. of patents issued and lapsed (expired, defaulted on annual registration fee, invalidation, etc.) | Total amount of rightsized R&D |
Share_open | Percentage of patents in possession (invented) by a particular right holder (or inventor) out of all applied-for and open patents in a particular subject matter (technology field, etc.), for a given nation. | Based on current right holders | Patent portfolio share |
Concentration | Percentage of patents in possession (invented) by a particular right holder (or inventor) in a particular subject (technology field, etc.), out of all applied for and open patents, for a given nation. | A measure of expertise or field of focus
No. of purchased (transacted) patents | Number of patents with a material change in ownership | 0) Patent transfer through M&A is included
1) Assignments from inventor to original assignee are excluded from purchases (transactions)
2) Transfer of ownership between company groups (e.g. Microsoft → Microsoft technology licensing, or samsung Display → Samsung Electronics) excluded from No. of purchased patents (transactions)
3) Exclude partial (equity) assignments, addition of some right holders from shared right holders, etc. | Investments in technology |
No. of litigated patents | No. of patents used in patent litigations | 1) Will cover patent infringement and confirmation litigations filed in the first instance in district court
2) Will also include patent litigations at the ITC (less than 1.5% of the total) | Patent Enforcement Aggressiveness
Risk
Marketability (if no market, no litigation) |
No. of trialed patents | No. of patents in patent trials | 1) Only inter partes trials (invalidation trials, confirmation trials) with the PTAB as the other party are included
2) Excludes trials with the Intellectual Property Office as the other party (appeals against decision of rejection, etc.) | Patent Enforcement Aggressiveness
Risk
Marketability (if no market, no litigation) |
No. of forward citations by examiners | In the examiner's examination of subsequent patents, if patents in possession of a particular right holder or invented patents of a particular inventor are recognized as preceding patents referenced in the examiner's examination, the number of such subsequent patents. | 1) The number of subsequent patents is a distinct number (e.g., if the same (1) subsequent patent cites multiple (n) held/invented patents of the same right holder/inventor, the no. of forward citations by examiners is 1. not n) | Size/scale of technology impact |
Share of forward citations by examiners (FC-E) | No. of forward citations by
examiners for patents in possession (invented) by a particular right holder
(or inventor), as a percentage of the total No. of forward citations by
examiners for all patents in a particular subject matter (technology field,
etc.), for a particular nation. | Relative size of technology impact
No. of international patent families | No. of patents applied for and published in non-priority countries that share one or more priority rights with the applied-for and published patents in possession (invented) by a particular right holder (or inventor), based on a particular country | Investments in technology (securing patent rights overseas is expensive)
Market (patents precede overseas product entry)
No. of patents rejecting subsequent patents (*) | In an examiner's examination of subsequent patents, if the examiner, citing patents in possession of a particular right holder or invented patents of a particular inventor, rejects subsequent patents as lacking patentability, the number of subsequent patents | Patentability determinations related to the No. of patents rejecting subsequent patents include i) novelty, and ii) non-obviousness. | Keys/scale of technology leadership.
(Existence of technical same or similarity with subsequent patents & possession of patents that are chronologically preceding (invented) = leadership) |
