Events contents and utilization scheme
PatentPia GoldenCompass provides a variety of events analysis contents with just one click.
Kinds of Events
The events provided by PatentPia GoldenCompass include i) patents involved in events, ii) financial events, and iii) social events (coming soon).
Patent-related events are events where patents are used. Patent-related events include i) patents transferred through M&A, ii) transactions such as patent litigation/patent trials, iv) standardized patents, v) FDA approvals where patents are used, and vi) government-funded R&Ds where patents are created as an achievement.
Financial events are those events that are targeted at companies. Financial events include i) M&A, ii) investments, iii) IPOs (listed companies in the nation, etc.), and will continue to expand in kind and scope.
Social events include i) news (coming soon), ii) other, etc.
Patent transactions
Patent transactions are events in which ownership of patent rights is transferred. Patent transactions include i) patent transactions in negotiations, ii) patent transfers through M&A, and iii) patent transfers between groups of companies. In the case of an M&A published, patents in possession of the defendant company (acquirer) are sometimes transferred to the acquirer and sometimes remain with the defendant company. If the patent rights are transferred in an M&A, the conveyance text will indicate the cause of the assignment as Merger or Acquisition.
Assignment events for patent rights that are not ownership transfers include i) establishment and release of (exclusive/non-exclusive) licenses, ii) establishment and release of security interests, and iii) name/address changes.
Patent Litigations
GoldenCompass provides comprehensive litigation events analysis contents for patent litigations in US district courts.
Patent litigations include infringement actions and actions seeking declaratory judgment.
Patent trials
Patent trials are patent litigation proceedings before an administrative organization (the Patent and Trademark Office or a patent administrative agency affiliated with the Intellectual Property Office). GoldenCompass treats only patent trials of a litigation nature (invalidation trial/confirmation of scope of rights trial, etc.) with parties as trials, i.e., excluding appeals against decision of rejection, which are appeals against the decision of the Intellectual Property Office.
Standard-essential patents
The standard-essential patents handled by GoldenCompass are only those patents that have been registered/declared by 10 standards management bodies/organizations. The standards management organizations covered by GoldenCompass include: i) ETSI, ii) IEEE, iii) ITU-T, iv) ITU-R, v) IEC, vi) ISO, vi) ISO/IEC JTC1, viii) MPEG LA, vx) SISVEL, x) ATSC, etc.
There are a number of other de facto standards organizations, etc., but we are not yet addressing patents administered by these organizations.
FDA approvals where patents related to the approval process were used (coming soon)
There are many cases where patents related to FDA approvals are used in the approval process.
Government-funded R&D
Patents originating from projects funded by the government, such as government-funded R&D, have private information (government interest, etc.). By processing this private information, patent data related to government-funded R&Ds is generated.
Forms of events contents
The representative forms of events contents are i) trends (time series), ii) lists (lists), iii) networks, etc.
Trends
Trends of the events themselves
Given a patent set with its own (input/selected) items and assigned/responded/mapped patents, there are various events in which the patents contained in that patent set are used. You can perform a time series analysis of the number of times these events occurred.
Below is the analysis contents of no. of litigations among events for the item of technonlogy field(input/selected) "Augmented reality".
This analysis counts the number of lawsuits, so if a patent is used in multiple lawsuits, it is counted as many times as it is used in the lawsuits. Therefore, the yearly No. of litigations is the same as the total number of lawsuits in the previous period.
By clicking on a figure in the analysis, you can see a list of litigations that occurred in that year or for the previous period.
Trends in patents used in events
Below is the analysis contents of the trend of No. of patents used in litigations for litigation events where the patent set assigned/responded/mapped to the item of technology field(input/selected) "Augmented reality".
This analysis aggregates the number of patents used in litigation, so even if one patent is used in multiple lawsuits, the overall aggregate is treated as one (distinct count of litigated patents). However, if it is used in multiple litigated cases in different years, it is counted as one per yearly count. Because a single patent may be used in multiple litigations in different years, the sum of the No. of patents used in litigations by yearly period may differ from the sum of the No. of patents used in litigations by all periods.
Click on any figure in the analysis to see a list of the No. of patents used in litigation for that year's litigation events or for the previous period.

Events & Patents using event
Speciallity of events and patents using event for companies
Litigation/trial events.
Events for companies, such as litigation or trials, have the concept of parties.
In the case of litigation, there is a plaintiff and a defendant. In the case of trials, there is the concept of petitioner and respondent. From a company's perspective, patents used in litigations are also divided into: i) patents used in litigations where the company is the plaintiff, and ii) patents used in litigations where the company is the defendant. From a company's perspective, patents used in trials are also divided into i) patents used in trials where the company is a petitioner and ii) patents used in trials where the company is a respondent.
The analysis contents, such as plaintiff or defendant, are based on the company as a party to the events as the primary reference. On the other hand, patents in possession or trials-involving patents in possession is an analysis based on the patents held by the company as the primary reference.
M&A/Investments events
M&A or investment events occur at the company level, not at the patent level; therefore, patents involved in events related to M&A are those patents in possession of the acquiring company. Similarly, patents related to investments refer to patents in possession of the invested companies.
Events and event-use patents for fields
The analysis contents for events and event-used patents for a field (technology/keyword/ patent classification (CPC/IPC, etc.), etc.) is an analysis based on the patents used in the event among the patent set assigned/responding/mapped to that particular field as the primary criteria.
